His hard line on homosexuality has seen other clergy fired for expressing even mildly pro-gay views. He lobbied for discrimination against gays in areas of employment, the military and adoption rights, saying "It is not unjust discrimination to take sexual orientation into account." He urged bishops in America to push for a ban on same-sex marriage and a repeal of any existing laws protecting same-sex couples.
